[19th Talk] Asst. Prof. Dr. Chan Cheow Thia: “Malaysian Crossings: Place and Language in the Worlding of Modern Chinese Literature”

Upcoming Event

Introduction

The nineteenth talk of the “Tan Lark Sye Lecture Series” will take place soon. The speaker Dr. Chan Cheow Thia will speak on his new published book with titled Malaysian Crossings: Place and Language in the Worlding of Modern Chinese Literature. By highlighting Mahua literature’s distinctive mode of evolution, Dr. Chan demonstrates that authors’ grasp of their marginality in the world-Chinese literary space has been the impetus for—rather than a barrier to—aesthetic inventiveness. He foregrounds the historical links between Malaysia and other Chinese-speaking regions, tracing how Mahua writers engage in the “worlding” of modern Chinese literature by navigating interconnected literary spaces. Focusing on writers including Lin Cantian, Han Suyin, Wang Anyi, and Li Yongping, whose works craft signature literary languages, Chan examines narrative representations of multilingual social realities and authorial reflections on colonial Malaya or independent Malaysia as valid literary terrain. Delineating the inter-Asian “crossings” of Mahua literary production—physical journeys, interactions among social groups, and mindset shifts—from the 1930s to the 2000s, he contends that new perspectives from the periphery are essential to understanding the globalization of modern Chinese literature. By emphasizing the inner diversities and connected histories in the margins, Malaysian Crossings offers a powerful argument for remapping global Chinese literature and world literature.

【28th Talk】Dr. Chen Tsung-Yuan: “The Sarawak Hakka Lion Dance: Folk Art, Politics, and Identity”

Upcoming Event

Introduction

The twenty-eighth talk of the “Tan Lark Sye Lecture Series” will take place soon. This talk features Dr. Chen Tsung-Yuan from Tamkang University as main speaker. Dr. Chen will deliver a presentation on the topic of the Sarawak Hakka Lion Dance. Historically, there has been limited systematic research on this cultural phenomenon in Sarawak, with a significant crisis of inheritance following World War II. However, in the 1980s, a resurgence occurred alongside the burgeoning of lion dance arts in Malaysia, garnering favor among both younger generations and various ethnic groups. This lecture will explore the development characteristics of the Sarawak Hakka Lion Dance through the lenses of folk art inheritance, ethnic politics, and Hakka identity. Dr. Chen will argue that within Malaysia’s diverse society, the continued existence and promotion of the Sarawak Hakka Lion Dance face challenges of cultural inheritance on the peripheries, while also exemplifying inclusivity, creativity, and adaptability in the pursuit of broader recognition.

【29th Talk】Asst. Prof. Dr. En Li: “Betting on the Civil Service Examinations: The Lottery in Late Qing China”

Upcoming Event

Introduction

The twenty-nineth talk of the “Tan Lark Sye Lecture Series” will take place soon. This talk features Dr. Li En from The University of Texas at Dallas as main speaker. Dr. Li will deliver a presentation on the topic of the Weixing, or “surname guessing.” It was a highly organized lottery practice in China wherein money was bet on the surnames of which candidates would pass the civil and military examinations. For centuries, up until 1905, the examination system was the primary means by which the Chinese state selected new officials from all over the empire and a way for commoners to climb the social ladder.

How was betting on the examinations possible and why did it matter? Opening with a weixing-related examination scandal in 1885, En Li reconstructs the inner mechanisms of weixing and other lottery games in the southern province of Guangdong. By placing the history of the lottery in a larger context, the speaker traces a series of institutional revenue innovations surrounding lottery regulation from the 1850s to the early 1900s, and depicts an expansive community created by the lottery with cultural and informational channels stretching among Guangdong, Southeast Asia, and North America. This research sheds light on a new reality that emerged during the final decades of China’s last imperial dynasty, with a nuanced understanding of competitions, strategic thinking by lottery players and public officials seeking to maximize revenues, and a global network of players.

Speaker

Dr. Li En (Assistant Professor, Department of History, The University of Texas at Dallas)

Dr. Li En holds a Ph.D. in History from Washington University in St. Louis and is currently an Assistant Professor in the Department of History at The University of Texas at Dallas. His research interests focus on the social and cultural history of modern and contemporary China. He is the author of Betting on the Civil Service Examinations: The Lottery in Late Qing China (Harvard University Asia Center, 2023). In 2021, he was awarded the College of Arts and Sciences Excellence in Teaching Award at Drake University.

Due to frequent inquiries from students about the rules of the ancient Chinese board game Shengguan Tu (a game related to the imperial examination system), Dr. Li is working on a book that will enable students in the U.S. to play Shengguan Tu and learn about the Chinese civil service system in the classroom. In his personal life, Dr. Li is also an enthusiast of Hawaiian dance. After performances, he often gets asked whether he is from Hawaii, which leaves him somewhat embarrassed. As a result, he is currently writing a book tracing the history of Hawaiian dance in China, starting from its introduction in 1920, noting that four generations of Chinese Hawaiian dancers have never been to Hawaii.

【30th Talk】Prof. Dr. Ralf Vollmann: “The Hakka language and culture in Europe”

Upcoming Event

Introduction

The thirtieth talk of the “Tan Lark Sye Lecture Series” will take place soon. This talk features Prof. Ralf Vollmann from The Universität Graz of Austria as main speaker. Prof. Vollmann reveals that the migration of Hakka people from China to Europe has introduced linguistic diversity to local communities. In the Netherlands, first-generation immigrants from Hong Kong, Suriname, and Indonesia brought new languages, but subsequent generations have integrated into Dutch society, losing the Hakka language. In Vienna, older Indian Hakka work in the food industry and speak Hakka, but younger generations pursue diverse careers and prefer mainstream languages like Dutch and German, weakening their Hakka identity. Despite local associations' efforts to preserve Hakka culture, these are mostly symbolic. In this lecture, Prof. Vollmann will discuss the development and current status of Hakka people in Europe.

Speaker

Prof. Ralf Vollmann

Prof. Ralf Vollmann (Sun Xueren) graduated from the University of Vienna in Austria, specializing in linguistics, Tibetan studies, and anthropology. He previously worked at the Austrian Academy of Sciences (Department of Linguistics and Phonetics) and is now a professor of linguistics at the University of Graz. 【31st Talk】Prof. Dr. Li Qirong: “The Role of Overseas Chinese as a Bridge and Link in Sino-French Friendly Relations”

Upcoming Event

Introduction

The thirty-first talk of the “Tan Lark Sye Lecture Series” will take place soon. This talk features Prof. Li Qirong from The Central China Normal University as main speaker. This year marks the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and France. Overseas Chinese in France have worked diligently and achieved significant progress in their careers. They have played a crucial role in fostering friendly relations between China and France. During World War I, 140,000 Chinese laborers joined the allied forces in France, with nearly 10,000 sacrificing their lives. After the war, 3,000 of these laborers settled in France, becoming the first group of Chinese expatriates in the country. These overseas Chinese have shown immense dedication and a deep sense of home and country. Chinese settlers in France strive not only for economic success but also for the full enjoyment of their civil rights and the fulfillment of their civic duties. They actively participate in local political life as engaged citizens. Furthermore, overseas Chinese serve as bridges and messengers of Sino-French cultural exchange. They vigorously promote Chinese education, organize Sino-French exchange forums, spread Chinese culinary traditions, foster friendship through cultural festivals, and publish bilingual publications to share traditional Chinese martial arts and culture. In this lecture, Prof. Li will share insights on the role of overseas Chinese in Sino-French relations.

This is a form of “care work” for our global community. 【36th Talk】Dr. Wu Jingling: “Staple Food or Commodity? The Relations between Thai Rice and Nation-state Building (1930s-1940s)”

Upcoming Event

Introduction

The 36th session of the “Tan Lark Sye Lecture Series,” organized by the Institute of International Education and the Tan Lark Sye Institute at New Era University College is now open for registration. The lecture will be delivered by Dr. Wu Jingling of the Center for Southeast Asian Studies, South China Normal University. The topic of this article focuses on Thailand’s nation-building process during the 1930s and 1940s, a period marked by political turbulence. The nation’s nation-building project faced significant challenges during this time. On the one hand, Thailand's political system was transformed from an absolute monarchy to a constitutional monarchy. On the other hand, the political framework, which centered on Thai identity, led to a series of racial tensions. Furthermore, Thailand had to navigate various international political forces while carefully safeguarding its independence. The rice industry, as Thailand’s most crucial economic, cultural, and political resource, was deeply intertwined with these political and economic issues. This article analyzes the complex relationship between the different roles of rice—as a crop, a food, and a commodity—and the challenges faced during the nation-building process. It argues that the Thai government chose to emphasize the commodity aspect of rice to address these challenges, while downplaying its role as a staple food, as the latter could not fulfill the practical needs of the nation-building agenda and the construction of national discourse.

The results confirmed that the scale has good reliability and validity, and is composed of three dimensions: Chinese Teaching Belief, Chinese Language Belief and Chinese Learners’ Belief. Then, 443 pre-service CAL teachers were surveyed to uncover the features of their teacher beliefs. The results show that the pre-service CAL teachers had overall strong beliefs. Specifically, their Chinese Teaching Belief was the strongest, followed by Chinese Language Belief, and Chinese Learners’ Belief was relatively weak; and that there are significant differences in overall beliefs and dimensions of pre-service CAL teachers with different learning stages and different CAL teaching experiences. The scale developed and validated in this study provides a tool reference for the measurement of pre-service CAL teachers’ beliefs.
