【1st Talk】Jia Yunfeng: “Shamanic Culture and its Essence of Existence”

Introduction Organized by New Era University College and curated by the Institute of International Education, the “International Academic and Cultural Exchange Series” will be held periodically throughout 2024. The series invites accomplished scholars and experts from both China and abroad to share their research and insights. The first lecture in this series will be delivered by Mr. Jia Yunfeng from Jilin Province, China, focusing on the topic of Shamanic Culture and Its Essence of Existence. Public understanding of shamanism often centres on religious belief and is frequently associated with superstition. In this lecture, Mr. Jia will challenge these misconceptions, exploring shamanism as a deeply rooted cultural tradition in Northeast China. He will analyse how it manifests in daily life and discuss its practical value and significance.

Jia Yunfeng (Postgraduate Student at New Era University College)

Jia Yunfeng is the founder of Shamanic Qimen, a mentor in the fields of Yi studies and Feng Shui, and an internationally certified senior psychological counsellor. Born and raised in Jilin Province—one of the birthplaces of shamanic culture—he was deeply immersed in shamanic traditions from an early age, profoundly shaped by its cultural essence. In 2015, he established a studio in Toronto, Canada; in 2019, he founded the Shamanic Qimen Research and Practice Centre in Shanghai; and in 2023, he travelled to Egypt for field study and advanced research on shamanic culture. With years of dedicated study, Jia has collaborated with various enterprises to provide consultation services rooted in shamanic principles.

Phang Hui Ting (Lecturer of Institute of International Education, New Era University College, and Head of the International Student Recruitment Office)

Phang Hui Ting is currently a lecturer at the Institute of International Education, New Era University College, and serves as the Head of the International Student Recruitment Office. She holds bachelor's degrees in Chinese Language and Literature from Beijing International Studies University. She earned her master's degree in Classical Chinese Philology from Beijing Normal University, a discipline that focuses on the collation and study of ancient Chinese literature.
Her primary research interests lie in the study of pre-Qin to Wei, Jin, and Northern and Southern dynasties literature. She has been recognized for her academic excellence, receiving the First-Class Beijing Government Scholarship for International Students during the 2019–2020 academic year and the Outstanding International Student Award from China's Ministry of Education in 2020–2021.

【2nd Talk】Assoc. Prof. Sun Huiying: “Research Approaches: The Arts of Aligning Topics and Methods”

Introduction

The second lecture in the “International Academic and Cultural Exchange Series” organized by New Era University College and curated by the Institute of International Education was given by Associate Professor Sun Huiying, Associate Dean of the Department of Journalism, School of Journalism and Communication, Xiamen University. The choice of topic and the use of research methodology are the key to a graduate student's dissertation. After scientifically and rationally selecting a topic and defining a research question, the research methodology used by graduate students to make a well-reasoned argument is very important to the quality of the dissertation. When creating a dissertation, graduate students should not only have the awareness of problems, theories, values, innovations, but also the awareness of methods. In this lecture, the speaker will discuss with students how to adapt the dissertation topic and research method with examples to help the dissertation writing.

Assoc. Prof. Sun Huiying (Associate Dean of the Department of Journalism, School of Journalism and Communication, Xiamen University)

Sun Huiying graduated from School of Liberal Arts, Renmin University of China with a PhD degree in literature. She is the deputy director of the Journalism Department of the School of Liberal Arts of Xiamen University, associate professor and master's supervisor, secretary-general of Chinese Association for History of Journalism and Communication, secretary-general of Taiwan and Overseas Chinese Media Committee, special expert of World Chinese Literature and Media Research Centre, and member of Fujian Documentary Film Committee. Media Research Centre, and member of the Documentary Film Committee of Fujian Province. Her main research fields include mobile media culture research, film and television art research, and cultural and creative industry research. The main courses he teaches include film and television language, radio and television interviewing, cultural and creative industries, short video creation, and mobile media culture research.

Assoc. Prof. Pua Shiau Chen (Institute of International Education, NEUC)

Pua Shiau Chen, PhD in Literature, graduated from Zhejiang University in China in 2012, specializing in literature, aesthetics, and Chinese culture, and is currently an Associate Professor in the Institute of International Education at New Era University College. She has published more than ten articles in international academic journals, such as “Qing” and “Qing” music,” “Lamentations and the value of life and death in the Han Dynasty,” “The poetic construction and meaning of Qu Yuan's “Tour,” etc. She has also published more than ten papers in national and international academic conferences. Dr. Pan has a wealth of experience in lecturing and has delivered more than thirty academic lectures.

Introduction Organized by New Era University College and planned by the Institute of International Education, the "International Academic and Cultural Exchange Series" lectures will be held periodically in 2025. The series invites distinguished scholars and experts from both domestic and international institutions who have made significant achievements in their research fields. The fourth lecture in this series will be delivered by Dr. Liu Liuhan from Chongqing Technology and Business University, China. Her lecture is titled "Patterns of the Tang Dynasty: Cultural Genes and Research Paths of Animal Motifs in Textiles”. This lecture will deconstruct current research findings on animal motifs in Tang dynasty textile and apparel patterns, outlining their historical context, typological lineage, and artistic paradigms. It will also uncover the underlying ritual-cultural genes and cross-regional transmission logic. Furthermore, the lecture will review the research methodology, offering both methodological insights and innovative inspiration for traditional pattern studies.
Speaker Dr. Liu LiuhanDr. Liu Liuhan is a full-time faculty member at the School of Modern International Art Design Academy, Chongqing Technology and Business University. She holds a bachelor's degree in Fashion Design and Engineering from Sichuan University, a master's degree in Fashion Design from the Accademia di Belle Arti di Brera in Milan, Italy, and a Ph.D. in Chinese Studies with a focus on Chinese Art and Aesthetics from New Era University College in Malaysia, where she was awarded for an outstanding doctoral dissertation.
Moderator Dr. Pua Shiau ChenDr. Pua Shiau Chen is currently an Associate Professor at the Institute of International Education, New Era University College, Malaysia. She holds a Ph.D. in Literature, with research expertise in poetics, aesthetics, and cultural studies. She has published over thirty academic articles in both domestic and international journals, such as "An Examination of the Concept of 'Qing' and 'Qing Music'," "The Poetic Construction and Implications of Qu Yuan's 'Wandering'," "Celestial Imagery in 'Odes of Jiaomiao," and "The Humor and Satirical Aesthetics in Huang Yao’s Folk Paintings." She has also presented more than thirty papers at academic conferences both locally and internationally. In addition, she has contributed to the compilation of the Encyclopedia of Buddhist Culture in Hangzhou and is currently a member of the Malaysia Design Council.
