Content Overview | The problem statement is critical to completing a dissertation. A well-defined problem statement not only aligns with other parts of the thesis but also helps students maintain focus and direction throughout the writing process. This paper aims to explore the characteristics of an effective problem statement and guide students on how to construct research questions, helping them overcome common challenges in this process. Azad Ali, a professor in the Computer Science department at Indiana University of Pennsylvania, and Shardul Pandya, former doctoral advisor at Capella University’s School of Business, Technology, and Healthcare Administration, have extensive experience guiding doctoral students. Their insights offer valuable support for students during the dissertation process and provide a helpful reference for future research and educational practice. |

Book Sharing Postscript
The Institute of International Education hosted a book talk discussing the impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on education. This event featured Dr. Voon Yeun Ting, a senior lecturer from the institute, who led a discussion on the book "How Artificial Intelligence Impacts Teaching: From Assignment Design and Personalized Learning to Innovative Assessment Methods" by Matt Miller. Approximately 40 faculty members and students attended.
Dr. Voon focused on the rapid development of generative AI technologies, particularly the widespread use of AI assistant tools like ChatGPT, and explored the challenges and strategies facing the education sector. She shared 30 practical teaching techniques from the book that leverage generative AI and discussed how educators should adopt an open-minded approach toward students using ChatGPT for personalized learning.
She emphasized that AI-powered tools are an inevitable trend in education, and rather than restricting student usage, the focus should be on guiding them to use these technologies responsibly and ethically. The key lies in preparing students to adapt to an AI-driven future while fostering media literacy and cultivating competent digital citizens.
