【40th Talk】Associate Professor Dr. Jiang Lai: “Women's Achievement and Leadership”

Introduction The 40th session of the “Tan Lark Sye Lecture Series,” organized by the Institute of International Education and the Tan Lark Sye Institute at New Era University College is now open for registration. This lecture features Associate Professor Dr. Jiang Lai from the Department of Public Administration at the School of Law, Shanghai University of International Business and Economics (SUIBE). Dr. Jiang will lead a discussion on the development of women's talent and leadership. As women attain higher levels of education and participate more broadly in the workforce, their empowerment, achievements, and leadership roles in the public sphere are growing at an unprecedented rate. Drawing on global and Chinese perspectives, Dr. Jiang will examine the characteristics, trends, and representations of female leadership. The talk will explore pathways for women's professional growth, the challenges they face, and strategies for overcoming barriers. This exploration of female leadership not only enriches the field of leadership studies and broadens the scope of women’s studies, but also promotes greater self-awareness among women and advances the cause of gender equality and harmony between the sexes.
Speaker Assoc. Prof. Dr. Jiang Lai (Shanghai University of International Business and Economics)
Jiang Lai holds a bachelor’s degree from East China Normal University, a master’s degree from Fudan University, and a Ph.D. jointly conferred by East China Normal University and the China Executive Leadership Academy Pudong. She completed her postdoctoral research at Fudan University and was a senior visiting scholar at Wellesley College in the United States. Dr. Jiang serves as a board member of the Shanghai Marriage and Family Studies Association and is a committee member of the Women's Leadership Research Division under the Shanghai Leadership Science Society. Her research focuses on women’s leadership, public policy, gender studies, and single-sex education. She is the author of Leadership Development and Effectiveness in Girls’ Schools: A Case Study of Wellesley College and Research on Women’s Leadership. She has also co-authored The New Era of Childbearing and Social Organizations and Public Security. Additionally, she has published over 30 papers in top-tier Chinese academic journals and internationally recognized SSCI journals. Dr. Jiang has led several major research projects, including a National Social Science Foundation project on women's employment under China’s two-child policy. Her work has earned her multiple accolades, such as the “Outstanding Doctoral Dissertation” from the China Women’s Research Society and the “Outstanding Theoretical Achievement in Women and Children Studies” from the Shanghai Women’s Federation. She has also played an active role in drafting Shanghai’s 12th, 13th, and 14th Five-Year Development Plans for Women and Children.
Moderator Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tey Shi Bin (Deputy Vice-Chancellor, New Era University College [International and Corporate Development])
Tey Shi Bin graduated with First-Class Honours from the Department of Chinese Studies at the University of Malaya. She was awarded the Chinese Government Full Scholarship for Postgraduate Studies by the China Scholarship Council (CSC)—jointly recommended by the Chinese Embassy in Malaysia, the Malaysian Ministry of Higher Education, and the University of Malaya. In 2010, she obtained her master’s degree in Classical Chinese Literature from Central China Normal University. She later received a CSC-funded scholarship to pursue her Ph.D. in Classical Philology at the same university. Both her master's and doctoral theses were awarded University Outstanding Thesis honors, and she was recognized as an Outstanding International Graduate. Dr. Tey is the author of A Study of the Fiction Section in the Bibliography of the Draft History of Qing: Main Text, Supplement, and Addenda. Her additional works include An Annotated Translation and Commentary on Dream Pool Essays (co-author), A Bibliographical Guide to Chinese Classical Texts in Digital Format (contributor), and Toward Humanism and Peace: The Global University Lectures of Daisaku Ikeda (chief editor). She has published over 20 academic articles in major journals, including CSSCI-indexed publications. She has delivered nearly 90 invited lectures, hosted academic events, and reviewed close to 20 scholarly projects. Her contributions have earned her multiple literary awards. Outside academia, Dr. Tey has worked as a columnist for the China Press literary supplement and as a branding consultant and copywriter in Malaysia. She is also certified under Malaysia’s Ministry of Human Resources as a Train-the-Trainer (TTT) professional.

Lecture Postscript

The 40th session of the Tan Lark Sye Lecture Series took place on 23rd April 2025. The guest speaker for this event were Assoc. Prof. Dr. Jiang Lai from the Department of Public Administration at the School of Law, Shanghai University of International Business and Economics (SUIBE), who delivered a lecture titled “Women's Talent Development and Leadership.” In her lecture, Dr. Jiang Lai delved into paths, challenges, dilemmas and coping strategies related to the development of female talent.

Dr. Jiang Lai was a senior visiting scholar at Wellesley College in the United States. She also serves as a board member of the Shanghai Marriage and Family Studies Association and as a committee member of the Women’s Leadership Research Committee under the Shanghai Leadership Science Society. She has authored several monographs, including Research on Leadership Development and Effectiveness in Girls’ Schools: A Case Study of Wellesley College and Studies on Women’s Leadership. She has also co-authored works such as The New Era of Childbirth and Social Organizations and Public Security. She has published over 30 papers in top-tier Chinese academic journals and internationally recognized SSCI-indexed journals. She has led various research projects, including the National Social Science Fund projecton “Women’s Employment under China’s Two-Child Policy”, and has received several academic honors, such as the Excellent Doctoral Dissertation Award by the All-China Women’s Federationand the Outstanding Theoretical Research Achievement Award on Women and Children by the Shanghai Women’s Federation.

During the lecture, Dr. Jiang highlighted how women's increasing levels of education and growing presence in the workforce have empowered them in the public sphere, leading to unprecedented achievements and leadership opportunities. She emphasized that the exploration of women’s leadership not only enriches leadership studies but also deepens and expands gender studies. It plays a significant role in awakening self-awareness among women and advancing gender equality and harmony.

Following the lecture, a Q&A session allowed the audience and the moderator to engage actively, the audience raised questions related to women's leadership, all of which Dr. Jiang patiently addressed. The lecture was hosted by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tey Shi Bin, Deputy Vice Chancellor of New Era University College, and drew the participation of approximately 170 attendees.
