The twenty-fifth talk of the “Tan Lark Sye Lecture Series” will take place soon. Professor Guo’s lecture will focus on the inheritance of Chinese language abroad as its main theme. Overseas Chinese have successively migrated from China to various parts of the world through different channels in different eras, bringing "Chinese language" to different corners of the globe. Among them, many Chinese have successfully achieved intergenerational transmission, forming Chinese languages in various parts of the world. The main contents of this lecture consist of four points: First, the historical journey of the Chinese language going abroad; Second, the current situation of the use of Chinese language overseas; Third, the research on overseas Chinese language and its inheritance, and finally, insights and reflections. |

Professor Guo Xi (Professor at Jinan University) Professor Guo Xi is a professor at Jinan University, a specially-appointed researcher at the Language Resources High-End Innovation Center, and the director of the Overseas Chinese Language Research Center. He is also a member of the Expert Committee on Chinese Language Education under the State Council Overseas Chinese Affairs Office, a council member of the Chinese Linguistic Society, and holds part-time professorships at various universities in China and abroad. He has served as the dean of the College of Chinese Language and Culture and the Research Institute of Chinese Language Education at Jinan University, vice president of Beijing Language and Culture University, president of the Chinese Sociolinguistics Society, professor at Nanjing University, visiting professor at the University of Khartoum in Sudan (where he also served as the head of the Chinese Department), visiting professor at Nanyang Technological University in Singapore, visiting scholar at the Chinese Language Teaching and Research Center in Singapore, and a visiting scholar at the Hong Kong Institute of Education. He has authored books such as Chinese Sociolinguistics, Chinese Language Studies, and Essays on Language and Language Application. He has also served as the chief editor for works like Introduction to Chinese Language Teaching, Contemporary Language Life, Report on the Status of Language Life in China, Key Facts on Language Life in China, Selected Bibliography of Global Chinese Language Studies, Chinese Language Teaching Research Series, and Chinese Language (Middle School Edition). Additionally, he has contributed to the editorial work of The Global Chinese Dictionary, The Great Global Chinese Dictionary, and The Dictionary of Synonyms and Idioms. He has published over 120 academic papers on linguistics and language education. |

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Wong Shwu Huey (Associate Professor in the Department of Education at New Era University College) Assoc. Prof. Dr. Wong Shwu Huey holds a Ph.D. in Education from Central China Normal University. She is currently an Associate Professor in the Department of Education at New Era University College and serves as a supervisor for both master’s and doctoral students. She is also the editor-in-chief of the academic journal Education and Teaching Research. Her main research interests include curriculum and instruction, teacher education, education and social culture, as well as Chinese and Chinese language education. She has edited works such as Theories and Practices of Chinese Language Teaching in Malaysia, Special Issue on Chinese Language Teaching for the 10th Anniversary of the Department of Education at New Era University College, Chinese Language Teaching and Research, and Chinese Education and Instruction. Dr. Wong has published numerous academic papers in prominent national and international journals, publications, and at international academic conferences. Additionally, she has delivered many Chinese-language presentations abroad and conducted over 100 in-service teacher training courses and lectures in China. |

The 25th session of the "Tan Lark Sye Lecture Series," organized by the Institute of International Education, New Era University College (IIE, NEUC) and the Tan Lark Sye Institute, was held on 27 December. The guest speakers for this event was Professor Dr. Guo Xi from Jinan University. It was attended by more than 180 people.
Professor Dr. Guo Xi, currently a professor at Jinan University, a distinguished researcher at the High-Precision Innovation Center for Language Resources, and the director of the Overseas Chinese Language Research Center. He is also a member of the Expert Committee on Chinese Language Education of the Overseas Chinese Affairs Office of the State Council, a director of the Chinese Linguistic Society, and holds adjunct professor positions at several universities both domestically and internationally. Professor Guo has previously served as the dean of the College of Chinese Language and Literature and the Institute of Chinese Language Education at Jinan University, the vice president of Beijing Language and Culture University, the president of the Chinese Society of Sociolinguistics, a professor at Nanjing University, a visiting professor at the University of Khartoum in Sudan (where he also served as the head of the Department of Chinese), a visiting professor at Nanyang Technological University in Singapore, a visiting scholar at the Chinese Language Research Center in Singapore, and a visiting scholar at the Hong Kong Institute of Education.
This lecture was titled " The Inheritance of Overseas Chinese Language and Its Research," focusing on the transmission of the Chinese language abroad. He emphasized that overseas Chinese have gradually migrated from China to various parts of the world at different times and through different channels, bringing "Chinese language" with them. Many overseas Chinese have successfully achieved intergenerational transmission, leading to the emergence of Chinese language varieties worldwide. Since the beginning of the new century, Chinese academia has made continuous progress in the study of overseas Chinese language and its transmission. The main content of the lecture included four points: first, the history of the Chinese language going abroad; second, the status of Chinese language use overseas; third, research on overseas Chinese language and its transmission; and finally, insights and reflections on these topics. The event was moderated by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Wong Shwu Huey from NEUC. It received enthusiastic feedback, with the audience actively participating in the Q&A session and eagerly engaging in discussions.
