[4th Talk] Dr. Boey Teik Soon: “A Century of Development in Malaysian Chinese Ink Painting”

Introduction

The fouth talk in the “Tan Lark Sye Lecture Series” will take place later this month. Dr. Paul Boey will speak about the history of Chinese ink painting in Malaysia over a century.

Dr. Paul Boey
Dr. Paul Boey, a postdoctoral researcher in Art Studies from Southeast University, China, primarily focuses on the history of Chinese and Western art, art education, and the cultural and artistic development of China and Southeast Asia under the Belt and Road Initiative. He currently serves as a mentor for postgraduate students at New Era University College and as a distinguished professor at Fujian Preschool Teachers College in China. Dr. Paul Boey was also the Director of the Center for Eastern Culture and Art Studies and a postgraduate supervisor at the Thai Chamber of Commerce University (2018), and was appointed as a visiting professor at Chongqing Technology and Business University (2019).
Dr. Paul Boey has presented papers at numerous academic conferences both in China and abroad. He contributed to the compilation of The History of Western Art Education (Hefei University of Technology Press, 2014), edited Art Sea Ripples: A Centenary Commemoration of Li Haiping (Southern University College, 2015), and authored several monographs, including The History of Art Education in Chinese Schools in Malaysia: The Local Development of Art Curriculum from the Essence of Chinese Education (Chinese Assembly Hall, Kuala Lumpur & Selangor, 2016) and A History of Art in Malaysia (Vols. I & II, Nanjing University Press, 2016). He also contributed to the compilation of The Art Footprints of Zhongling in a Century in The Century of Zhongling: World Zhongling Artist Invitational Exhibition (Organizing Committee of the Century Zhongling World Zhongling Artist Invitational Exhibition, 2017) and co-edited A Century of History of Penang Chinese Schools (2020

Dr. Tey Shi Bin (Assistant Professor, Dean of the International Education College at New Era University College)
Dr. Tey Shi Bin graduated with a First-Class Honours Bachelor's degree in Chinese Studies from the University of Malaya. She was jointly recommended by the Chinese Embassy in Malaysia, the Ministry of Higher Education of Malaysia, and the Department of Chinese Studies at the University of Malaya to receive the "Chinese Government Full Scholarship" for further studies in China. In 2010, she completed her Master's degree in Chinese Classical Literature at Central China Normal University in China, earning honors for an excellent thesis and being named an outstanding international graduate student. In 2014, she received her Ph.D. in Classical Philology from the same institution, again being recognized for her outstanding thesis and for her excellence as a graduating international student.
After earning her doctoral degree, Dr. Tey returned to Malaysia to serve in the Department of Chinese Studies at New Era University College. On January 1, 2018, she was promoted to Associate Head of the Department and Assistant Professor. On April 1, 2019, she was appointed as the founding Dean of the International Education College, responsible for expanding and developing the institution's international affairs. In August 2019, she received the First Outstanding Teacher Award. In December 2021, Dr. Tey was appointed as a contract Associate Professor at the University of Electronic Science and Technology of China, a 985 and Double First-Class University.
Dr. Tey  has published over 20 academic papers and works of poetry and prose. She is the author of monographs such as A Study of the Sub-Section Novels in the "Bibliographical Section" of the "History of Qing" Supplement and Addenda and is the chief editor of Chinese Scholars. She has delivered over 60 specialized lectures and Moderatored and participated in nearly 20 academic review sessions. Dr. Tey has received several literary awards and has written columns for the China Daily supplement. Additionally, she works as a corporate copywriting consultant and has written brand content for businesses.

Lecture Postscript

The 4th session of the "Tan Lark Sye Lecture Series," organized by the Institute of International Education, New Era University College (IIE, NEUC) and the Tan Lark Sye Institute, was held on 16th February 2022. The lecture featured famous Malaysian artist Dr. Boey Teik Soon as the keynote speaker. It was attended by more than 170 people.

Dr. Boey Teik Soon is a postdoctoral researcher in art studies at Southeast University, China. His main research areas include the history of Chinese and foreign art, art education, and the cultural and artistic development of China and Southeast Asia under the Belt and Road Initiative. He currently serves as a master's and doctoral supervisor at New Era University College and is a distinguished professor at Fujian Preschool Normal College in China. He has also held positions as the director of the Center for Eastern Cultural and Artistic Studies at the University of the Thai Chamber of Commerce and as a visiting professor at Chongqing Technology and Business University in China.

This lecture was titled " A Century of Development in Malaysian Chinese Ink Painting." It primarily discusses the evolution of ink painting from British Malaya to post-independence Malaysia, sharing the contributions of artists over the past century to the development of local ink painting. Finally, Dr. Boey Teik Soon shared his latest work, "One Hundred Years of Ink Traces: Research on the Development of Malaysian Ink Painting Art and Its Figures," which he has been studying for the past ten years, with the audience. The event was moderated by Assistant Professor Dr. Lew Siew Boon from NEUC. It received enthusiastic feedback, with the audience actively participating in the Q&A session and eagerly engaging in discussions.
