IntroductionIntroduction: Organized by New Era University College and planned by Institute of International Education, the " International Academic and Cultural Exchange Series " lectures will be held periodically throughout 2025. The series invites esteemed scholars and experts from both domestic and international institutions who have made significant achievements in their respective research fields. The fifth lecture in this series will be delivered by PhD candidate Han Pengyu from New Era University College. His lecture is titled “Calamity from the Flames of War: The Tumu Crisis and Its Impact on the Ming Dynasty”. This lecture will delve into the historical event known as the Tumu Crisis. As one of the most devastating defeats in the early Ming Dynasty, the Tumu Crisis marked a major turning point in Ming history. It had significant consequences not only in the short term but also long-lasting effects on the dynasty’s mid-to-late development. The lecture will focus on three main aspects: the causes of the battle, its immediate aftermath, and its long-term historical impact.

Han Pengyu is a doctoral student at New Era University College, specializing in the study of Ming Dynasty history. He completed his undergraduate at Nanyang Normal University, China. He pursued his master’s degree at New Era University College in Malaysia, where he was awarded for his outstanding master's thesis.

Cheng Hui Xin (Lecturer)

Cheng Hui Xin, currently a Lecturer at the Institute of International Education, New Era University College, Malaysia. She obtained her Bachelor’s degree in Chinese Language and Literature from New Era University College and was subsequently awarded the Chinese Government Scholarship to pursue further studies in China. She received her Master’s degree in Ancient Chinese Literature from Beijing Normal University, China. The primary area of research is Tang and Song dynasty literature, with particular attention to writings on life and death, funerary culture, and related topics. Master’s thesis was entitled "Su Shi’s Reflections on Life and Death and His Literary Expressions".

Han Pengyu, the speaker for this session, is currently pursuing a doctorate at New Era University College, specializing in Ming Dynasty history. He earned his bachelor’s degree from Nanyang Normal University in China and completed his master’s studies at New Era University College in Malaysia, where he was awarded for his outstanding thesis.

In his lecture, Han Pengyu explored the causes and consequences of the Tumu Crisis, analysing both its short-term and long-term impacts. He argued that this battle, while a tragic defeat in the early Ming period, also marked a significant turning point in the dynasty’s development and had far-reaching implications for the mid-to-late Ming era. His presentation provided attendees with an in-depth and nuanced understanding of the origins, progression, and long-term consequences of the Tumu Crisis. The session was moderated by Ms. Cheng Hui Xin, a lecturer at the Institute of International Education, New Era University College.
