【7th Talk】Dr. Li Peishan: A Thousand Years of Tradition, the Beauty of Sanqin: A Study on the Aesthetic Characteristics and Causes of Shaanxi Drum Dance

IntroductionIntroduction: Organized by New Era University College and planned by Institute of International Education, the "International Academic and Cultural Exchange Series " lectures will be held periodically throughout 2026. The series invites esteemed scholars and experts from both domestic and international institutions who have made significant achievements in their respective research fields. The seventh lecture of this series will be delivered by Dr. Li Peishan, an Associate Professor in the Dance Department of the School of Music and Dance at Heze University in Shandong Province. Titled “A Thousand Years of Tradition, the Beauty of Sanqin : A Study on the Aesthetic Characteristics and Causes of Shaanxi Drum Dance,” the lecture integrates interdisciplinary theories and methodologies from dance historiography and dance ecology. Focusing on Shaanxi Drum Dance as its central subject, the lecture traces its historical development, analyzes its artistic forms, identifies its aesthetic characteristics, and explores the underlying factors shaping them. It also highlights the aesthetic value of this traditional dance form.

Li Peishan

Dr. Li Peishan, an Associate Professor in the Dance Department of the School of Music and Dance at Heze University in Shandong Province. She has participated in over 20 major performances, including CCTV's "Best Moments" and "Flowers in May." Her work "The Peacock Flies Southeast" won the Third Prize in the Solo Dance category at the Shandong Provincial Teachers and Students Basic Skills Competition (2019), while "The Fire of the Western Regions" received the Outstanding Performance Award at the Jiangsu Provincial Ethnic Minority Dance Exhibition (2016). Her primary research focuses on folk dance culture and dance education in higher education institutions. She has led and completed six provincial, ministerial, and municipal-level research projects, including those under the Shandong Social Science Planning Program, published one academic monograph and more than ten academic papers, and received three municipal-level awards for her research achievements. She obtained her Ph.D. in Chinese Cultural Studies from New Era University College. Her doctoral dissertation, titled “Aesthetic Study of Shaanxi Drum Dance in China,” was honoured with the University-Level Outstanding  Ph.D. Thesis Award by New Era University College.

Wong Chee Wei

Dr. Wong Chee Wei currently he serves as a senior lecturer in the Department of Music at the Malaysian Institute of Art and as a doctoral supervisor at New Era University College. He is the former Vice President of the Society of Malaysian Contemporary Composers and a board member of the Chin Yong Music Society Malaysia. In 2023, Wong served as the music director for the Selangor Spring Festival Gala and premiered a large vocal work composed specifically for the theme. In 2026, served as the Music Director for the opera Hang Li Po, and was responsible for music arrangement and orchestration. He has received the excellent award in the 5th China-ASEAN Music Festival Composition Competition, and the excellent award in the 3rd China National Music Festival “Academy Awards” Composition Competition.
