Reading Material | Arrived Safely: Stories of Vietnamese Immigrants Around Us, Including Business Heiresses, Taxi Drivers, Market Vendors, and Nail Salon Aunts... |
Content Overview | Beginning in the 1970s, this book narrates how, due to the North-South Vietnam War, people were displaced and struggled to reach a place of well-being. In the 1980s and 1990s, how did Chinese people live under the rule of the Communist Party of Vietnam? Through marriage, family reunification, and studying abroad, immigrants settled overseas. Between academics and careers, how did they find their footing and become lights illuminating others? Seventeen young authors, through anthropological field investigations, interviewed Vietnamese immigrants in Ankang communities, campuses, alleys, markets, and street food stalls. In this book club, guide and author Chou Chao-Hung will use research methods as an entry point to share the fieldwork investigation methods, anecdotes, challenges, and writing ethics he employed in his chapter "Xiu-Jun, Chun-Zhuang, Qiu-Mei's Nail Salon: Freedom at the Fingertips." |
