Focusing on the historical setting of Larut from the mid-19th to early 20th century, the book expands outward from the people, events, and objects of that time and place, weaving together captivating vignettes. It reveals the intricate interactions among Chinese communities, other ethnic groups, nations, and economic environments. The book is divided into three main sections: the everyday reality of Chinese society, the chronicles of Larut, and the Chinese who bid farewell to Tangshan. Each section consists of six chapters. |
