Reading Material | "The Great Learning" from the "Book of Rites" |
Content Overview | As one of the Confucian classics and a part of the Four Books, The Great Learning presents the Confucian ideal blueprint for personal development—a framework for learning how to cultivate oneself into a "noble person" (daren). This framework encompasses the "Three Guiding Principles" (illustrating illustrious virtue, renovating the people, and resting in the highest excellence) and the "Eight Steps" (investigating things, extending knowledge, being sincere in thoughts, rectifying the heart-mind, cultivating the self, regulating the family, governing the state, and bringing peace to the world). Professor Ning will elucidate the meaning of each principle and step in an accessible manner, highlighting the enduring contemporary value and significance of The Great Learning's learning framework—particularly in the realm of spiritual cultivation. |
