Speaker | Associate Professor Dr. Pua Shiau Chen (International Education Institute) |
Reading Material | Stephen Owen; translated by Chen Xiaoliang: "Traditional Chinese Poetry and Poetics: A Phenomenon of the World," Chapter 8 "Solitude," Beijing: China Social Sciences Press, 2013. |
Content Overview | In this book, Stephen Owen proposes and elaborates on the significant thesis of China's "non-fictional" poetic tradition. Borrowing Ernest Fenollosa's famous assertion that Chinese characters are the ideal language for poetry, one might say that Owen discovers how Chinese poetry within this non-fictional tradition represents the ideal form of poetry—one rooted in the diversity of nature, thereby subverting the Western literary tradition's view of poetry as a "second nature" divinely crafted by the poet. To read Chinese poetry, one must abandon the notion of analyzing it purely as a linguistic construct. Instead, one should dwell within the contemporaneous poetic context to listen for its authentic voice. |
