Praised by scholars such as Hu Shi and Yang Liansheng, and regarded by Yu Yingshi as a model of integrity in Chinese historiography, Yan Gengwang compiled this work based on decades of academic experience. The book includes three of his notable essays: "Experience in Historiography," "Questions and Answers on Historiography," and "Qian Mu, Mr. Bin Si, and I."
