Speaker | Ms. Phang Hui Ting (Lecturer, Institute of International Education) |
Reading Material | Chen Yuan: Practical Internship in Source Studies and Methodology of Qing Dynasty Historical Research, Beijing: The Commercial Press, 2014. |
Content Overview | The pursuit of historical sources is guided by two golden rules: "Do not trust others' words; people may deceive you." This book compiles Professor Chen Yuan's teaching diaries and notes from his courses "Practical Exercises in Historical Source Studies" and "Qing Dynasty Historical Textual Criticism Methods," taught at Fu Jen Catholic University between September 1947 and June 1949, along with lecture notes by Mr. Li Hu. "Practical Exercises in Historical Source Studies" was an innovative course in historical education, fostering a spirit of skepticism and problem-solving skills among students. The course emphasized not only knowledge acquisition but also the transmission of critical methodologies. By examining Qing scholars' works on historical textual criticism, students learned how to identify problems, gather evidence, and assess outcomes, thereby acquiring proper methods for reading history, citing sources, textual criticism, and forming judgments. In this reading session, the Speaker will explain how to learn the collection and evaluation of historical materials, the organization and structuring of these materials, and the writing and revision of scholarly works through Professor Chen Yuan's "Practical Exercises in Historical Source Studies." |
