| Content Overview | A Brief History of Chinese Literary Criticism is a work on the history of literary criticism written by Zhou Xunchu. It was first published by Fudan University Press in September 2007, and was later republished by Phoenix Publishing House in 2022 as Volume 20 of The Collected Works of Zhou Xunchu. With a length of approximately 200,000 Chinese characters, the book systematically traces the development of ancient Chinese literary criticism from the pre-Qin period to the late Qing dynasty. It is divided into seven parts and thirty-nine chapters, discussing the evolution of literary theories across different historical periods. The literary criticism examined in the book covers not only poetry and prose, but also drama, fiction, and theories of folk literature. By situating literary criticism within the broader contexts of social thought and literary creation in each period, the book offers a detailed analysis of the rise and decline of various schools of literary criticism, as well as their lines of inheritance and transformation. |
