Eighth "Malaysia - Hong Kong Student Cultural Exchange Programme" Writes New Chapter; Lim Soon Tiong Continues to Support Youth Development
Co-organised by Hang Seng University of Hong Kong, New Era University College, Southern University College, and Han Chiang University College of Communication, the eighth edition of the "Malaysia–Hong Kong Student Cultural Exchange Programme" was held from 8 to 21 June 2026, bringing together 42 teachers and students from four tertiary institutions in Hong Kong, Kuala Lumpur, Johor, and Penang. The 14-day exchange programme took place across various locations in Hong Kong and Malaysia, aiming to offer young participants first-hand exposure to the diverse historical, cultural, and social landscapes of each place through site visits and in-depth observation, while also fostering cross-cultural interaction and learning among the youth.
This year's exchange continued the tradition established since its inception in 2016, once again receiving sponsorship from Mr. Lim Soon Tiong, an alumnus of Nantah University, who has consistently provided a platform for dialogue and learning for youths from both regions. Following a rigorous selection and interview process, 10 students from New Era University College were awarded this valuable opportunity to participate.
Mr. Lim Soon Tiong: Hopes Youth Will Cherish Exchange Opportunities and Forge Lasting Friendships
In his address, the event's sponsor, Mr. Lim Soon Tiong, encouraged the students to treasure this unique learning journey, actively engage with peers from different institutions, learn from each other's cultural backgrounds and life experiences, and build enduring friendships.
He emphasised that the significance of the exchange programme lies not only in visits and experiential activities, but also in cultivating an open global perspective and cross-cultural understanding through genuine interpersonal interaction, thereby laying a foundation for navigating an increasingly globalised society in the future.
Prof. Dr. Mok Soon Chong: Seeing the Legacy of Chinese Education through the Spirit of Philanthropy
Professor Dr. Mok Soon Chong, Vice-chancellor of New Era University College, delivered a special lecture titled "The Philanthropic Families of Malaysian Chinese Education," introducing students to several key figures who have made outstanding contributions to the development of Chinese education in Malaysia, including Lim Lian Geok, Tan Kah Kee, Tan Lark Sye, and Ng Ah Choo. He guided the students to understand their spirit and philosophy of advancing education and giving back to society.
He pointed out that the development of Malaysian Chinese education to its present state would not have been possible without the long-term, selfless dedication of generations of educators, entrepreneurs, and community leaders. He expressed his hope that students would learn from the life stories of these predecessors, appreciate the arduous journey of Chinese education, and reflect on how they themselves can shoulder social responsibilities in the future.
Malaysian and Hong Kong Youth Bridge Geographical Divides, Building Cultural Exchange Links
The first leg of the exchange began in Hong Kong, aiming to allow Malaysian students to further appreciate the linguistic and cultural similarities and differences between the two regions. Guided by their Hong Kong counterparts, they gained an in-depth experience of the local pace of life and urban vibrancy, facilitating mutual exchange and dialogue. Subsequently, the delegation visited Penang, Kuala Lumpur, and Johor Bahru, touring numerous historical sites and museums that showcase Malaysia's multicultural heritage, and participating in cultural workshops and thematic lectures. Combining dynamic and static formats, the programme enabled Hong Kong students to gain a first-person perspective on the rich and diverse cultural characteristics of Malaysia.
Since its inception, the " Malaysia–Hong Kong Student Cultural Exchange Programme " has involved over 300 students, establishing itself as a vital platform for youth interaction between the two regions. It is hoped that all participants will transform what they have seen and heard during the journey into nourishment for future growth, continuously deepening the ties between the youth of both sides, jointly promoting cultural heritage and social development, and ensuring that international exchange and youth dialogue continue to flourish.
