【International Academic and Cultural Exchange Series : Session 5 】 Han Pengyu: Calamity from the Flames of War: The Tumu Crisis and Its Impact on the Ming Dynasty

Organized by New Era University College and planned by the Institute of International Education, the fifth lecture in the "International Academic and Cultural Exchange Series” was held on October 13, 2025. The speaker for this session was Han Pengyu, a PhD student at New Era University College, who delivered a lecture titled “Calamity from the Flames of War: The Tumu Crisis and Its Impact on the Ming Dynasty”. The event drew an audience of nearly 46 participants, including faculty members, postgraduate students, and members of the public.

Han Pengyu, the speaker for this session, is currently pursuing a doctorate at New Era University College, specializing in Ming Dynasty history. He earned his bachelor’s degree from Nanyang Normal University in China and completed his master’s studies at New Era University College in Malaysia, where he was awarded for his outstanding thesis.

In his lecture, Han Pengyu explored the causes and consequences of the Tumu Crisis, analysing both its short-term and long-term impacts. He argued that this battle, while a tragic defeat in the early Ming period, also marked a significant turning point in the dynasty’s development and had far-reaching implications for the mid-to-late Ming era. His presentation provided attendees with an in-depth and nuanced understanding of the origins, progression, and long-term consequences of the Tumu Crisis. The session was moderated by Ms. Cheng Hui Xin, a lecturer at the Institute of International Education, New Era University College.
