New Era 2025 National “Non-Chinese High School Students Star” of Chinese Competition Final Round – Live Performance Competition
Kajang: Organised by New Era University College (NEUC) and co-organised by the Institute of International Education (IIE) and the Department of Teaching Chinese as a Second Language, the Final Round – Live Performance Competition of the 2025 National “Non-Chinese High School Students Star” of Chinese Competition was held on 9 August, with 12 contestants competing. The final featured a themed speech session titled “My Journey with Chinese” and a Chinese Cultural Talent Showcase, testing the contestants’ overall proficiency in Chinese. The competition aims to inspire non-Chinese students to develop a passion for learning Chinese and to support their future academic and career development.
Lee Yun Xin: Institutional support builds a platform for showcasing talents
The Organizing Committee Chairperson and Head of the Department of Teaching Chinese as a Second Language, Senior Lecturer Ms. Lee Yun Xin, said that the competition has received official recognition from the Sports, Co-curricular and Arts Division (BSKK), Ministry of Education Malaysia . She expressed her gratitude to the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in Malaysia and KunKwan-International Mandarin Language Training Centre for their support. Ms. Lee noted that the competition provides non-Chinese, mixed-heritage, and non-Chinese-background learners with a platform to showcase their language skills, while deepening their understanding and appreciation of Chinese culture.
Prof. Dr. Mok Soon Chong: Chinese as a bridge between communities
Prof. Dr. Mok Soon Chong, Advisor to the event and Vice-Chancellor of NEUC, expressed hope that Chinese in Malaysia will not only be learned and used by the Chinese community but also by non-Chinese learners, serving as a cultural bridge between ethnic groups. He believes that mastering Chinese will bring advantages in both daily life and the workplace.
Layla’s “Journey with Chinese”
Event Ambassador Layla Sania, Malaysia singer, shared her personal experience, saying that the beauty of the Chinese language lies in its diversity of meanings and expressions, which is also what makes it challenging and enjoyable to learn, motivating her to persevere in her studies. She believes the competition offers Chinese-language learners opportunities to showcase and strengthen their skills.
