Guangdong Han Opera Overseas (Malaysia) Promotion and Heritage Centre Officially Launched
On June 15, 2025, the Guangdong Han Opera Overseas (Malaysia) Promotion and Heritage Centre was officially launched, accompanied by an online signing ceremony. The initiative is jointly driven by the Guangdong Han Opera Heritage Research Institute, Meizhou Federation of Returned Overseas Chinese, The Federation of Ka Yin Chu Association of Malaysia, and New Era University College (NEUC). It aims to promote Guangdong Han Opera—an officially recognized National Intangible Cultural Heritage—through structured teaching and cultural exchange in Malaysia.
The launch ceremony occurred at the “Peony Theatre” in Meizhou, China, and was simultaneously connected via livestream with Malaysia. More than 160 guests from both countries attended the event, including representatives from the Meizhou Municipal Government, the Guangdong Han Opera Inheritance and Research Institute, the Federation of Ka Yin Chu Association of Malaysia, and NEUC.
The Guangdong Han Opera programme will advance through three main components: online instruction, cultural immersion trips to China, and performance showcases in Malaysia. The curriculum covers vocal techniques, performance roles, stage movements, and historical-cultural background—combining both technical artistry and cultural depth.
Mr. James Leong, President of the Federation of Ka Yin Chu Association of Malaysia, stated in his speech that the Guangdong Han Opera training program aims to promote traditional Chinese opera and deepen cultural exchange between Malaysia and China. He also expressed sincere gratitude to the Guangdong Han Opera Inheritance and Research Institute for its strong support and thoughtful preparation.
Prof. Dr. Mok emphasized NEUC’s ongoing commitment to Chinese cultural education, especially in fostering youth participation through hands-on learning. He noted that the collaboration is not only an educational initiative but also a meaningful exploration of cross-border cultural exchange.
The establishment of this centre marks a significant step forward in the promotion of Guangdong Han Opera in Malaysia and serves as a new cultural bridge between China and Malaysia.
