NEUC: Kicking Off the 2nd Cohort of the Basic Japanese Language Course
14 May 2025 — The second cohort of the Basic Japanese Language Course at New Era University College (NEUC) officially kicked off online, attracting 11 participants, including students and staff from within the university, as well as external students and working professionals, embarking together on a journey to learn the Japanese language and explore Japanese culture.
Ms. Yap Seow Yu, the Head of the Language and Intercultural Centre at the Institute of International Education, NEUC, highlighted the significant achievements of the previous cohort, with several students successfully passing the Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) at N4 and N5 levels. This demonstrates that with dedicated participation, students can make tangible progress in a short period. She shared her own foreign language learning journey and pointed out that challenges such as vocabulary memorization, grammar understanding, and pronunciation are inevitable in language learning. However, by maintaining curiosity and consistent practice, students can gradually overcome these obstacles and achieve their learning goals.
Ms. Yap Yuet Ngor, Lecturer of the Basic Japanese Language Course, encouraged students with her 45 years of Japanese learning and teaching experience, noting that while Japanese is "easy to learn but hard to master," it is not difficult for those who already have a foundation in Chinese. She emphasized that mastering the three writing systems—katakana, hiragana, and kanji—is key to learning Japanese. With the widespread popularity of anime culture and the abundance of learning resources such as apps, manga, and J-pop, learners now have various tools to enhance their language input. She added that learning Japanese not only improves career competitiveness and broadens international horizons but is also a strategic language skill.
