Delegation from Huaqiao University
On 20 September 2024, a delegation from the Research Institute of Global Chinese and Area Studies at Huaqiao University visited New Era University College (NEUC) for an exchange and research discussion, with the aim of strengthening the academic cooperation between the two institutions and exploring more feasible collaborative projects.
The attendees from Huaqiao University included Deputy Dean of the Research Institute of Global Chinese and Area Studies Prof. Zheng Wenbiao, Research Institute of Global Chinese and Area Studies Associate Prof. Liu Juntao, Assistant Prof. Zheng Jiancheng, Assistant Prof. Wu Qinxiang, Assistant Prof. Guo Ruimin, and three postgraduate students. The attendees from NEUC included Prof. Lew Bon Hoi (Head, Centre of Malaysia History), Assistant Prof. Dr. Lew Siew Boon (Head, International Academic Exchange Office), Assistant Prof. Dr. Pek Wee Chuen (Head, Department of Southeast Asian Studies), Dr. Siew Wen Jia (Senior Lecturer, Chinese Language and Literature Department), Mr. Ng Khai Boon (Senior Lecturer, Institute of International Education), and Ms. Wong Jing Yin (Education Programme Specialist).
During the meeting, representatives from both universities introduced the current development of their campuses and discussed future feasible projects and exchange opportunities to promote and implement more collaborative initiatives, such as joint dual-degree programs, student exchange programs, and co-hosting academic conferences or seminars. After the meeting, the attendees took a group photo in front of the administration building.
The delegation from the Research Institute of Global Chinese and Area Studies at Huaqiao University, led by Assistant Prof. Dr. Lew Siew Boon, then visited the Tan Lark Sye library and the Nanyang University Archive Centre to gain a deeper understanding of NEUC’s historical origins, founding background, and the development of Chinese education in Malaysia.
After lunch, the delegation from the Research Institute of Global Chinese and Area Studies at Huaqiao University, accompanied by Assistant Prof. Dr. Lew Siew Boon and Assistant Prof. Dr. Pek Wee Chuen, visited the Kajang Cantonese Cemetery and the Kajang Shen Sze She Yar Temple. With explanations provided by Dr. Pek, the attendees expressed that they had greatly benefited from this exchange and looked forward to closer cooperation between the two universities in the future.
