Welcoming New Beginnings, Continuing the Legacy: NEUC Celebrates the Commencement Ceremony for International Students January 2025 and the Elevation of the Department of Teaching Chinese as a Second Language
On January 22, 2025, New Era University College (NEUC) hosted the Commencement Ceremony for International Students January 2025 and Breaking New Ground: Departmental Journey Celebration for the Department of Teaching Chinese as a Second Language at the B500 Hall. The event aimed to welcome the new batch of international students while celebrating the elevation of the Diploma in Teaching Chinese as a Second Language course to an independent department, witnessed by over 100 international students in attendance.
Associate Professor Dr. Tey Shi Bin, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (International and Corporate Development), noted that since opening its doors to international students, NEUC has welcomed over 800 foreign students, highlighting its influence and strong reputation in the field of international education. She emphasized that each year, a significant number of students from China choose courses related to Teaching Chinese as a Second Language, demonstrating that the Chinese language is not only a tool for communication but also a vital bridge for cultural exchange. NEUC has played a key role in promoting Chinese education and cultural dissemination.
Professor Dr. Mok Soon Chong, Vice-Chancellor of NEUC, highlighted the institution's mission to uphold Chinese cultural heritage, supported by its library and a "warm and caring" teaching team. With shared educational ideals, the institution offers rich academic resources and cultural enrichment, continuously advancing to new heights and establishing itself as a vital bridge for international academic exchange. He encouraged international students to immerse themselves in multicultural experiences during their time at NEUC and discover their purpose and direction in life.
Lee Yun Xin, Head of the Department of Teaching Chinese as a Second Language, expressed that many international students choose to study the Teaching Chinese as a Second Language course and, upon graduation, return to the education sector to contribute to the promotion of Teaching Chinese as a Second Language. She remarked that NEUC is entering a new phase of development, connecting to the global stage by cultivating exceptional talent and writing a new chapter of excellence. She looks forward to working with faculty, staff, and students to witness NEUC’s growth and achievements, jointly advancing the field of Teaching Chinese as a Second Language to a broader international audience.
Chen Zhen, the student representative, stated that choosing NEUC reflects recognition of the institution's rich heritage and outstanding quality. He believes that through his learning journey at NEUC, he will receive professional guidance from academic mentors, grow alongside his peers, and contribute to the university’s development, national prosperity, and regional cooperation.
The event featured a variety of performances, including the creative Snake Year-themed red packet series “Beh Pai Seh,” a 24 Festive Drums performance by I-Cool Percussion, a crosstalk by international students Liu Miaozhuang and Kong Chuilin, a Hulusi solo by Wang Feng, a duet performance by the "Flying High" singers, Vivian Chia Hui Yuan and Tang Siew Yee, an a cappella performance of the 2025 Chinese New Year MV by the Delayed Vocal Band, and a lion dance show.
