On 17 July 2025, to welcome a new cohort of international students embarking on their academic journey at New Era University College (NEUC), the Institute of International Education (IIE) held the “July 2025 Opening Ceremony for International Postgraduate Students” at the B500 Auditorium. The event was attended by around 100 faculty members and students, including 57 new students enrolling in July.

During the ceremony, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Lew Siew Boon, the Head of International Academic Exchange Office, encouraged the newcomers to embrace the challenges of living abroad with openness and inclusivity. She remarked, “The discomfort and unfamiliarity of being in a new environment are some of life’s most valuable nutrients — opportunities for expanding one’s thinking and fostering growth.” She also called on students to actively build positive relationships with their supervisors, emphasizing that “growth is a two-way journey, and breakthroughs come from collaboration.” She reassured students that the entire faculty and staff of the IIE are committed to supporting their academic and personal well-being.

Prof. Dr. Mok Soon Chong, Vice-Chancellor, then delivered his address, referencing Tan Lark Sye Library and Nantah Building as symbols of NEUC’s heritage as the “descendant of Nanyang University.” He highlighted NEUC’s mission to carry forward the educational spirit and philosophy of Nanyang University — “continuously pioneering in the history of Chinese education.” He also expressed the vision of “spreading Chinese language and culture worldwide”, encouraging international students to take on the role of cultural ambassadors while pursuing their academic dreams.

Representing the new cohort, Mr. Zhao Xuyang, the PhD student from China, shared his reflections: “I chose NEUC not only because it stands as a beacon of Chinese education in Malaysia, but also for its embodiment of the Nanyang spirit — perseverance, academic excellence, and social commitment.” On behalf of all new students, he expressed the hope that their journey abroad would see them become “deep cultivators of knowledge, breakers of ideological boundaries, and illuminators of human values.”

To create a warm and welcoming atmosphere, the ceremony featured a variety of cultural performances, including a suona solo, vocal performances, and a traditional handkerchief dance — all showcasing the richness of multiculturalism and heartfelt blessings from senior students. The event also included an academic and administrative briefing session to help newcomers understand academic regulations, campus resources, and administrative procedures, easing their transition into university life. The event concluded with Ms. Wang Xiaohua introducing the newly established Eastern Culture and Mindfulness Research Centre, aimed at promoting spiritual growth and academic exchange in a multicultural context.
