"Zong Xiang Le, Dragon Boat Festival" International Student Dragon Boat Festival Tea Party

To celebrate the upcoming Dragon Boat Festival in 2024, the Institute of International Education, New Era University held a " Zong Xiang Le, Dragon Boat Festival" tea party for international postgraduate students on June 4, 2024 (Tuesday) at the Selangor & Kuala Lumpur Hokkien Association. The event aimed to allow students to experience the atmosphere of the Malaysian Dragon Boat Festival and traditional Chinese culture by personally making rice dumplings and enjoying tea.

Firstly, Ms. Ng Geok Chee, the chairwoman of the Selangor & Kuala Lumpur Hokkien Association Women's Group, delivered a speech and welcomed the staff members and students from New Era University College. She expressed that the Selangor & Kuala Lumpur Hokkien Association plays an important role in education and culture and values the inheritance of Chinese culture. Culture is the strength of unity for the Chinese community, hence the association actively organizes and participates in various Chinese traditional festivals. She also felt very happy to have the opportunity to gather with the staff members and students of New Era University College to experience the atmosphere and interact during the Dragon Boat Festival.

During the tea party, under the guidance of members of the Selangor & Kuala Lumpur Hokkien Association Women's Group, international students experienced traditional customs of the Dragon Boat Festival and learned to wrap rice dumplings themselves. Not only did everyone taste the rice dumplings they made themselves, but they also tasted various traditional rice dumplings, such as Nyonya rice dumplings and alkaline rice dumplings. Meanwhile, guest speaker Dr. Ling Tek Soon introduced the history of Malaysian Chinese Group and the Selangor & Kuala Lumpur Hokkien Association to the international students. Afterwards, everyone sat together in a pleasant atmosphere, enjoying rice dumplings and tea, and experiencing the charm of traditional Dragon Boat Festival culture together.
