Lunar New Year Potluck Celebration for International Students
With the arrival of spring, the Year of the Rabbit brings luck and happiness. To usher in the Lunar New Year and allow international students to experience the vibrant festivities of the Malaysian Chinese New Year, the Institute of International Education (IIE) held a "Lunar New Year Potluck Celebration for International Students" on Wednesday, January 11, 2023.
The Vice-Chancellor of NEUC, Professor Dr. Mok Soon Chong, warmly greeted the international students and emphasized the special occasion of celebrating the New Year together in Malaysia. Furthermore, Dean of IIE, Associate Professor Dr. Tey Shi Bin, conveyed her wish for all international students to have a happy New Year and to feel the warmth of Malaysia, quoting a song lyric: "Expressing love with the weather of Malaysia."
The term "Potluck" refers to a popular dining tradition in Western countries where guests bring a homemade dish to share, creating a varied and plentiful meal. International students showcased their culinary skills by preparing dishes such as braised beef, scrambled eggs with tomatoes, fried dumplings, and chicken soup. Some also brought pastries, desserts, snacks, fruits, and sushi. The diverse array of food filled several long tables, making for a unique and delightful feast.
Additionally, IIE arranged a "Tossing" session for international students to experience Malaysia's unique New Year celebration. The room buzzed with excitement as everyone tossed the ingredients and shouted "Heng ah! Ong ah! Huat ah!"
To wrap up the event, IIE organized a quiz competition using Blooket. The top ten participants were rewarded with red envelopes.
